ART LESSON PLAN

SUBJECT: CERAMICS

GRADE: SIXTH

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will create a lidded jar
  2. Students will use coil building and carving techniques.
  3. Students will create an original form based upon historical examples.
  4. Students will build upon previous skills and reinforce basic ceramic termonology:
    • wedging
    • slip and score
    • leather hard
    • greenware
    • bisqueware
    • glazeware
    • kiln
    • pyrometric cone
    • engobe

MATERIALS:

terra cotta clay, various clay tools, pottery examples and slides, engobes and glazes.

MOTIVATION:

The students will view examples of pottery from egypt, mesopotamia, and greece during the course of the lesson to enhance their creativity and to put the development of ceramic technology into perspective. Pottery is one of the best examples of human ingenuity. The multitude of ceramic objects found by archeologists have helped to create a historical record of civilizations that have long since vanished. By studying the techniques and forms used in ceramics the students develop an understanding of the cultures and an appreciation for their art.

PROCEDURE:

Introduce lesson:

After jars are fired and clear glaze will be added over the engobes.

EVALUATION:

see attached rubric.

IN PROGRESS

MEETS EXPECTATIONS

EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Shape of Jar

NO DISCERNABLE SHOULDER OR NECK

VISIBLE ATTEMPT TO CREATE SHOULDERS AND NECK, BUT OVERALL SHAPE IS ASYMMETRICAL

SYMMETRICAL SHAPE WITH SHOULDER AND NECK

ADDITION OF DECORATIVE FEET, MORE COMPLEX BODY AND/OR MORE ELABORATE NECK

LID

NO ATTEMPT TO INTEGRATE LID INTO SHAPE OF JAR

INTEGRAL LID, BUT LACKING SKILL IN EXECUTION OF LIP AND CARVING

TIGHT FITTING INTEGRAL LID SHOWING EVIDENCE OF CREATIVE THOUGHT AND PLANNING

TIGHT FITTING INTEGRAL LID WITH ELABORATE DETAILS AND/OR UNUSUAL LOCKING MECHANISM

DECORATION

NO ATTEMPT TO ENHANCE DESIGN THROUGH DECORATION

DECORATION WAS ATTEMPTED BUT SOME ASPECTS ARE HAPHAZARD

DECORATION USED TO ENHANCE OVERALL DESIGN OF THE JAR

ELABORATE DECORATION IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE DESIGN AND USED TO ADD INFORMATION ABOUT THE DESIGN CONCEPT

OVERALL DESIGN

NO EVIDENCE OF A PRECONCIEVED DESIGN

THOUGHT PUT INTO DESIGN, BUT FAILED IN EXECUTION

WELL PLANNED AND EXECUTED DESIGN

ELABORATE DESIGN CONCEPT AND EXECUTION
