ART LESSON PLAN SUBJECT: TWELVE COLOR WHEEL GRADE: FIFTH   OBJECTIVES: Learn primary, secondary, and intermediate colors. Create a twelve color wheel using tempera paint and the primary colors. Learn and use proper classroom painting procedures. MATERIALS: Tempera paint, brushes, water containers, paper towels, blank color wheels.

MOTIVATION:

Learning and using the color wheel is one of the foundations of making art. Through the discussion and creation of a color wheel the students will learn how to make colors and use them effectively in their art.

PROCEDURE:

TEACHER DEMONSTRATION: Gather Students

• Explain that students will be painting a color wheel by combining the three primary colors and painting them in their proper places on the color wheel.
• Discuss the placement of the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) on the wheel. The primary colors are connected by the solid lines that form a triangle. There are three circles in between each primary color.
• Discuss and demonstrate mixing the secondary colors (orange, green, and violet).
  1. Use mixing trays to make new colors.
  2. Do not pour paint from cups into trays, but scoop it out from the cup using your paint brush.
  3. Make sure that you clean your paint brush before getting the next color.
  4. Attempt to mix equal amounts of each color.
  5. Mix together two primary colors and then paint that color in the circle that is halfway between the two primary colors that were used to create it.
  6. Continue until all of the secondary colors are in place.
• After finishing the secondary colors the students will move on to the intermediate colors.
• Follow the same procedures as for the secondary colors, except this time you will be adding one primary color to one secondary color.
• Paint the intermediate color in between the primary and secondary colors that were used to create it.
• Continue until the entire color wheel is complete.

STUDENT PROCEDURES:

After demonstrations are complete the students will return to their seats and begin working. Students will be permitted to work at their own pace until finished.

EVALUATION:

Evaluation of this lesson is completely objective. Students must create the correct colors and place them in the correct place. Additional consideration will be given to technical skill.
