Most young people enjoy watching cartoons and reading comic books. Many of them realize the advanced artistic skills which are required to create this type of art, but most of them have not taked the time to consider cartoons and comics as an art form. They only know it as a diversion or type of entertainment.
Many of the superheroes, villans, and comic characters that we have known for many years have become recognizable symbols across the world. Each generation develops characters which are relevent to the world that they live in. The American youth of 1940 needed a Superman, but they would not have been able to comprehend a character like Spawn. Modern comic books also have begun to venture into storylines which attempt to sensitize readers to many global issues including the homeless, child slavery, and drug addiction.
After veiwing examples of past and present comics and discussing the social impact of this art form, the students will begin designing a comic character of their own.
