GRADE: FIFTH

OBJECTIVES:

  2. Create a good design in black and white which demonstrates knowledge of at least three of the following: symmetry, asymmetry, repetition, variety, pattern, texture, unity.

MATERIALS:

12X12 white paper, 6X9 black paper, scissors, glue, white pencils, black pencils.

MOTIVATION:

Students will have spent the previous two art classes learning how to analyze and interpret art works, specifically paintings. they should be anxious to put their new skills to use. The students will be told that the project that they are about to undertake will seem to be a simple one. but that it is more difficult than they think. Designing in black and white is as difficult, if not more so, as designing with many more colors. The more effort that they put into the assignment, the more exciting the finished product will be.

PROCEDURE:

Gather students around one table and demonstrate:

  1. Place black rectangle in the center of the white paper and ask students to evaluate the resulting black and white composition. It is not a very interesting one is it.
  2. Demonstrate how to improve the composition by cutting the black paper.
    • Try to keep paper in the same area that it was in before you cut it. That is, do not cut a piece off and then move it to the other side of the black paper.
    • Try to vary the sizes of the black shapes and lines that you cut and the shapes and sizes of white spaces and lines that appear between the black paper.
    • Use pencils to enhance design and add textures.

EVALUATION:

Finished products will be evaluated based upon creativity, originality and the above stated objectives.
