Strides in Student Achievement
Improved student achievement in core subjects of reading, writing, math and science is a priority at Westmont Hilltop School District. The commitment of administrators, teachers, and students is clearly visible in steadily increasing proficiency levels on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) over the past five years.
Science: It’s Elementary
Westmont Hilltop Elementary School is a proud participant in Pennsylvania’s Science: It’s Elementary (SIE) program. Launched in 2006 by Governor Ed Rendell, SIE is a $10 million initiative that combines inquiry-based, hands-on science instruction and fully stocked science kits with intensive teacher training, coaching, and professional development. Westmont Hilltop was first awarded a grant to participate in 2007 and has experienced marked improvement in student motivation and classroom performance in grades K through 4 ever since.
“Classrooms for the Future” Promotes 21st Century Learning Today
One of the goals of Westmont Hilltop School District is to prepare each and every student for success in a changing and competitive global society. A grantee of Pennsylvania’s Classrooms for the Future (CFF) initiative, Westmont Hilltop School District received nearly a quarter-million dollars for technology coaches and equipment to more effectively integrate advanced technology tools in our classrooms. Equipment purchases ranged from laptops and mobile carts to Promethean Boards and wireless access points. The district utilized special CFF pricing to purchase additional technology and received a separate local grant for a pilot project that incorporated the use of electronic responders in the middle school. The responders provide teachers with immediate feedback of students’ understanding of key concepts.
Challenging Curriculum Provides Jump-Start to College
Although actual numbers vary from year to year, on average, 85 percent of Westmont Hilltop graduates further their education at two-year and four-year institutions of higher learning and/or post-secondary training programs. The district has five partner institutions that will issue college credit for student completion of specified advanced placement and honors courses at Westmont Hilltop High School. Out of 571 students in the high school, nearly 50 percent have taken at least one honors course this year; almost a third have enrolled in two or more honors classes; and more than 21 percent have taken four or more advanced or honors level classes. High school seniors can also benefit from dual enrollment opportunities at four area universities. On average over the past three years, one in three students from Westmont Hilltop High School received college credit through dual or concurrent enrollment opportunities at WHSD.
