Individual Counseling

Individual counseling services are available to all students. Individual counseling within the school setting is a short-term service. This service is typically 4-6 sessions during the school day and addresses concerns that are a barrier to the student's learning. A student may receive this service as a result of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) process. A parent or staff member may notice concerns that affect a student's learning and complete a referral to the SAP team. The SAP team will gather information from the parent, teacher and student in order to determine appropriate supports for that student. A parent will be notified of the recommended supports and have the opportunity to agree or disagree with the recommended supports (including individual counseling) for their student. A referral to an outside agency may be made if the counselor and parent feel that a more intense therapeutic approach is necessary.
