Write a letter to the editor in response to any problem. For example, you could look in the daily Tribune-Democrat. It would be better to look in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette or the New York Times. Keep your comments to 225 to 250 words--no more. If a word, or sentence, is not needed, strike it out. This is good training for poetry and essay writing as well. If you can say something in fewer words, do so. Be concise A student came up to me a few years ago, assuring me that he could not strike out a single word. I was able to get rid of his first three sentences. Be concise.
Note: To do this, write a formal business letter. The first paragraph should explain your purpose. More specifically, what you want to accomplish with your letter. The second paragraph(s) should be your letter, or the problem you are addressing. Get right to the point. Moreover, the last paragraph should be some kind of thank you that does not sound silly.
