A Message from the Jr/Sr High School Principal, Tom Mitchell

This morning a parent sent me a screenshot of a student’s snapchat post of six knives and the caption, “Should use one” and some emoji’s. Because the student was in school, the student was searched, and detained prior to the Upper Yoder police arrival. Please know that we used the Cambria County non-emergency hotline because there was no weapon found on campus. The police were called as a precaution and for consultation. At this point, the Upper Yoder Police Department has determined there is no direct threat to the school nor its students. We appreciate your patience as we work through this situation and your understanding that the student involved is a minor and afforded confidentiality.

Friday, January 5, 2018 will be a NON-STUDENT DAY

Friday, January 5, 2018 will become a NON-STUDENT DAY. Teachers will report for an Act 80 inservice day, which counts as one of the 180 student days.

Teachers will engage in much-needed curriculum revision that is directly related to the Comprehensive Plan that will go into effect on July 1, 2018. To meet the goals of the Comprehensive Plan we have a lot of curriculum work that must be done, and we are having difficulty finding teacher time for that. Converting January 5th to an Act 80 day will give us a much needed jump-start to improving student achievement.

As always, we appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation.

Westmont Schools Closed on Monday, December 11, 2017

Late last night the Westmont Hilltop administration was made aware of a threat via social media of harm against our students. We have been working closely with the Upper Yoder Police Department throughout the early morning hours of Monday, December 11, 2017 to determine the credibility of the threat, and that process is ongoing. We have also consulted with Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan.

As of 4:00 am Monday morning, we have not been able to determine the credibility of the threat. As such, I have made the decision to cancel school for all Westmont Hilltop students, grades K-12, for Monday, December 11, 2017.

I understand that this closing places a burden on families to make last minute arrangements; for that, I am sorry. In the interest of student safety, however, I believe this action is necessary.

Westmont Hilltop High School seniors Ethan Dubnansky and Grayson Moyer were named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
