Westmont Hilltop’s Community Service Class Raises $1,500 for the Women’s Help Center

[Westmont Hilltop, PA; April 4, 2022] - Brian Moore is in his final year of teaching at the Westmont Hilltop School District after a 30-year career, but he is still finding new ways to help his students and our community.  Mr.Moore is teaching a new high school course called Public Service, focused on serving the needs of others.  Recently, the junior-senior high students joined together to raise $1,500 to benefit the Women’s Help Center through the Penny Wars fundraiser.

Penny Wars is an activity where classrooms compete to raise the most money, with pennies counting toward the classroom’s total.  Students from other classrooms add nickels, dimes, and quarters, while the students from the designated Penny Wars classroom try to raise the total with just pennies.  Westmont Hilltop Jr-Sr High School Principal Lynn Clement stated, “It was a fun and exciting way for our students to raise money for an excellent cause.”

The Women’s Help Center provides violence prevention and character education programs for our students to help prevent domestic violence and foster positive relationships.

The Public Service course gives students a better understanding of the needs of their community and the ways they can help improve the community for everyone.  In addition to completing two fundraisers this school year, the Public Service class emphasizes volunteering time to support charitable programs and community activities.  Students have volunteered with the Cambria County Arts Center during Artober Fest and helped support the Westmont Hilltop Westy Wardrobe, which provides gently used clothing at no cost for students in need.

During the first semester, Mr. Moore’s students focused on strengthening the relationship with existing student activities tasked with helping our community.  The groups of students worked together with the Student Council, assisting with the bi-annual blood drive.

Westmont Hilltop Jr.-Sr. High School is sponsoring a community blood drive on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 7:30 - 12:00.  Visit https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive if you would like to participate in the blood drive.
