Grade 5 Class Information

Math with Mr. Mehall [email protected] or Mr. Hastings [email protected]

  • On a daily basis, we will be covering one math lesson. Students will have physical books and also have online access. After each lesson, students will be asked to complete centers to reinforce the content taught.
  • Daily Centers may include:
    • Quick Check (5 questions)
    • Practice Buddy (10-12 questions)
    • Success Maker (adapted spiraling material 5-10 minutes a day)
  • Time Management:
    • Fifteen minutes per class (on average) is devoted to center work.  If centers are not completed in class, students will have time during morning homeroom period, during I/E period at the end of the day, or they will need to complete centers at home.
  • Centers for a topic will not be due until the day of testing which will be shared in advance with students.  We recommend keeping up with centers on a daily basis when possible.

ELA with Miss. Zipf ([email protected])

  • Mini Lesson
    • In each unit, your kiddo will be given a magazine full of nonfiction and fictional reading passages that follow a certain topic or theme. Each day we will close-read these passages by highlighting, annotating, discussing, and answering questions. These activities are designed to help your kiddo dig deeper into the text and have better comprehension.
  • Centers
    • At the beginning of each week, your kiddo will be given centers. They are due on Friday. Your kiddo will be given at least 30 minutes or longer to work on them each day during class. Whatever is not completed in class is expected to be either completed during I/E time or at home. As long as your kiddo uses his or her time wisely, they should have plenty of time to complete everything at school.
    • Centers typically consist of literature circles, guided reading, and a close reading activity.
      • For Literature circles, the kiddos get to choose 1 book to read from a list of 3 possible choices. Each week, the kiddos are assigned to read a certain amount of pages. As they are reading, they will answer comprehension questions and complete a literature circle job. On Friday, they will meet with their group to discuss what they read that week. After your kiddo is finished reading the book, they will complete a project. The project will be worked on in class.

Science with Mr. Mehall

  • We will cover 5 major units throughout the year.
    • Life Sciences
    • Earth and Space
    • Energy and Motion
    • Earth Structures
    • Light and Sound
  • Multiple graded hands-on lab activities and projects will be completed during each unit.  These activities will incorporate technology.
  • Quizzes and exams will be given during and at the end of each unit.
  • We venture to Stackhouse Park multiple times a year for our science lessons.  Students will be given prior knowledge of this so they can dress appropriately.
  • There will not be regular homework given in science.  Most of the work will be completed in class, as students will be provided enough time to finish assignments in school.  If a project/assignment is not completed during school hours, it may then be required to be finished at home.  This information will be updated via Remind101 and through Google Classroom.

Social Studies with Mr. Hastings

  • Bell Ringer
    • Geography Activity
    • 50 States / Capitals
    • U.S. Landmarks
  • Book Units 1-5
    • While using textbooks, students will be taught how to fully navigate through the texbook. We will focus on highlighting important information, using headings/subheadings/index/glossary,  and generally learn how to quickly locate information. Most lesson reviews (5 pt graded assignments) will be Open Book in order to practice textbook navigation skills. Study Guides will be provided prior to Unit Tests which are nearly identical to the questions seen on actual tests.
  • Projects, Novels, and Technology
    • Between units in the textbook, students will also participate in fun projects that will require use of school technology to research and expand learning in self-directed ways. We will also incorporate a Historical Fiction novel to enhance and broaden knowledge and concepts found in the textbook.
  • There will be no regular HW assignments, unless directed to complete an assignment on a certain day. I encourage students to regularly utilize the “KEY IDEAS” online portion of our program that summarizes our textbook reading.

Student Responsibilities for All Classes

  • If students need extra help, they should reach out to any teacher at any point during the year.
  • If students have habitual incomplete centers/assignments they will be subject to discipline referrals.
  • Any students who receive a Green Slip for minor behaviors will be required to have it signed by a parent/guardian and returned within 2-3 school days. We want the students to communicate their behaviors with their parents before Office Discipline Referrals are initiated.
