Suggested Summer Reading

Kindergarten (going into first grade)
Our preference is that families read a book of the child's choice (or a portion of it) daily to them. The most important skill that we want to build is desire, not phonics, sight words, or knowledge of a genre. Books read aloud can be of any level of difficulty, so we do not want to limit or steer parents anywhere but to the interests of their own children.

First Grade (going into second grade)
Books written by Kevin Henkes or Steve Jenkins, National Geographic, Pete the Cat books (Read alouds), Frog and Toad for on-level kids.

Second Grade (going into third grade)
Easy Readers: Frog & Toad books, Splat the Cat, Henry and Mudge books, Fancy Nancy books
Chapter Books: Cam Jansen series, Horrible Harry series, Amelia Bedelia series, Nate the Great series, Beverly Cleary books, Flat Stanley series, My Weird School Bus series, Magic Tree House series, Bailey School Kids series, The Black Lagoon series, Miss Nelson series
